RISK MANAGEMENT ALERT
TOPIC: Water Trampolines
A water
trampoline, like other water recreation attractions, can add increased fun,
excitement, and desirability to your camp’s aquatic program. Its inherent risk also increases the
potential for injury to participants. To
provide the highest level of safety, follow the following water trampoline
guidelines.
Þ Set-up and preparation
ð
Read
and follow the manufacturer’s directions carefully before using your water
trampoline.
ð
Check
the trampoline regularly for wear and tear, including any exposed metal on the
frame or springs. Do not use the
trampoline until all damage is
repaired.
ð
Always
inspect the area around and under the water trampoline before each use to ensure the water is at least
ten feet deep and free of all rocks, logs, sandbars, and underwater
obstructions for at least 30 feet in all directions.
ð
Never
use the water trampoline in rough water conditions, during a storm, or when
there is lightning. If an unexpected
storm arises while using the water trampoline, seek shelter on shore. Do not stay on the water trampoline.
ð
Always
be sure the water trampoline is securely anchored before it is used.
Þ Operation and use
ð
Establish
minimum size and/or age requirements, e.g., no one less than six years old.
ð
Require
the use of an approved personal flotation device for children under a specified
age.
ð
Prohibit swimming or playing
underneath the water trampoline at any time.
ð
Allow only one jumper at any one
time.
ð
Require all entry into the water from
the water trampoline to be FEET FIRST.
à No diving from the trampoline.
à Do not permit summersaults. Improper landing
can result in spinal cord injuries.
In addition to the above,
supervision and control should be like any water recreation attraction.
Þ There must be a sufficient number of
on-duty lifeguards to
ð
safely
supervise all the activity in the swimming area, i.e.,
à to maintain manageable zone sizes
à to maintain an appropriate
swimmer-to-lifeguard ratio
ð
safely
control the attraction itself, i.e.,
à at least one guard must be
responsible for controlling the flow of users onto the device
à at least one other guard must be
responsible for clearing the water upon exit
Þ
Rules
and procedures must be posted, explained to the users, and enforced by the
lifeguards.
Þ
Lifeguards
must be trained to react to emergencies specific to the device and its
surrounding area.
Þ
The
attraction must be clearly marked as “closed” and entry physically restricted
when not in use.
