Training Programs The
Redwoods Group offers several training courses specifically
tailored to the operations of a YMCA in order to enhance
the safety efforts of the YMCAs who are in the Redwoods
Group YMCA Insurance Program. The following courses
are some of those offered. Each is normally presented
by a Redwoods’ associate at your YMCA facility.

Employment Practices
Safety Training
Safety Training Programs are available exclusively to
YMCAs from The Redwoods Group. Successful YMCAs understand
that ongoing training is a major factor in all effective
safety programs. They also realize that improving safety
and reducing incidents and accidents not only reduces
operating expenses but, perhaps more importantly, has
a positive impact on member satisfaction and retention
as well as staff morale.
Sexual Abuse
Prevention
Sexual Abuse Prevention Training is a modified version
of the YMCA of the USA Child Abuse Prevention program
and is appropriate for both employee and volunteer groups.
It can be modified to fit any time frame from 1 to 3
hours, depending upon your needs. Aspects of the training
include the YMCA of the USA video, the code of conduct,
disclosure, definition of child abuse, and much more.
Camp Counselor
Training
Camp Counselor Training provides both a broad counselor
safety orientation and an overview of the YMCA of the
USA Child Abuse Prevention program. This session is
intended for all summer day and resident camp staff.
It emphasizes the distinction between proper and negligent
supervision, gives numerous examples of incidents from
YMCAs around the country, and much more. Course length
is typically 1 1/2 to 2 hours, depending on your needs.
This is a great way to start the camping year. Camp
safety training is also provided as a DVD formatted
video to aid you in training your counselors.
Back to Basics
Back to Basics (a defensive driver program) is a modular
program that can be used for initial orientation, as
a refresher course, or for remedial
training. Not only is the program extremely flexible
because of its modular nature, it provides the advantage
of being locally administered, allowing for training
of a single individual according to your own timetable.
Each program segment takes less than 5 minutes to complete
for an average reader and has a written test (evidence
of proper supervision) and driving scenarios. An initial
orientation consists of 16 segments, remedial training
normally 7 or 8 segments. A training class can be provided
for management staff to illustrate the most effective
usage of the program for your personnel.
Claims, Claims, Claims
Claims, Claims, Claims is a brief orientation (about
1 hour) for those responsible for reporting incidents
or claims, or for professional staff in general. The
course reviews how to accurately complete an incident/accident
report, how to follow up on an incident, and how effective
reporting helps safeguard your YMCA by giving your insurer
the tools for a proper defense. Allow about an hour.
A Risk Management
Overview
A Risk Management Overview is a multi-media presentation,
which is from 2 to 2 ½ hours in length, and is
designed especially for branch executives, program directors,
and others who need to be aware of the way that risk
management fits into a YMCA’s big picture. Besides
being a basic primer for risk management, the presentation
illustrates how risk management is not a disabling device
but an asset that enables a YMCA to safely offer the
programming that its members and communities need and
desire.
Employment Practices
Employment Practices Seminar is an interactive session
designed for management staff and provides a close and
very practical look at the what, how, when, and why
of the employment relationship. Candid discussions begin
with the very basics and explore many of the hidden
traps and pitfalls of human resource management. Allow
about 3 hours to give time for questions and pertinent
discussion. |
