Stewards of Children is an evidence-based program designed to teach the public to recognize, respond and prevent child sexual abuse. But the program needs community-based champions to aid in distribution. This is where the Y comes in. YMCAs around the country are perfectly positioned to bring communities together for training and action.
In our webinar, we're recruiting State Alliances to help fight child sexual abuse in the US. We have a great plan and great tools. We also have great momentum. Seven Alliances have adopted state-wide initiatives (CA, PA, NJ. NC, SC, RI, and DE) to fight child sexual abuse in their geographies. And more than 100 YMCAs have already begun to convene their communities to learn how to fight.

Data shows that 10% of children will be sexually abused before they turn 18. The Y is perfectly poised to address such a pervasive problem. Our locations throughout the US and our power to bring community leaders and citizens together means our work can extend evidence-based prevention training to more adults than ever before, empowering them with the skills and motivation to protect kids.
As of this moment, we have trained more than 28,000 adults across 20 states, giving us a large base for growth and good insight into what works. The partners involved provide the content, the delivery system and the leadership to engage communities at a much larger scale. The content is Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children training, which is proven to increase knowledge and change child-protective behaviors long-term. The delivery system is the network of local YMCA, which can leverage their deep relationships to bring the training to people throughout the communities they serve. As the network of Ys participating grows, our collective fight to protect children grows across the country.
